Rasha's Story

"In the Nuba Mountains, one of Sudan’s most conflict prone areas, four families, a mixture of Arab and Nuba were caught up in an inter-tribal conflict. The Nuba Mountain Organisation decided to give the four families, three goats. At first the families said ‘What’s the point of giving three goats to four families?’ The organiser explained that they were being offered the opportunity to rear the goats together in order to build a flock that they could all profit from. Reluctantly they agreed, and over time they built up the flock. Relationships are now much better, and continue to build over time. The Nuba Mountain Organisation have now distributed goats to a number of other families in similar situations across the area."

You may have tried all the obvious things and none of them worked. Now’s the time to use your imagination – think laterally – envision what it would be like if you could get through the conflict and then find a path to get there. Do some brainstorming – open ended thinking, without barriers. What could I do to start the conversation? What could I do to show I really want to make up? What could I do to deal with the underlying issues? And just to get your started – when Ashima couldn’t get women in Kashmir interested in her peacebuilding project, she went down to the market place with her hair dyed an interesting shade of pink. Women crowded around to find out where she got the hair dye. And then she started talking to them about peace.
